
A Sort of Clowning by Richard Hoggart
The first volume of Hoggart's "Life and Times" described his working-class childhood in Leeds. This books opens in 1940, when he joned the Royal Artillery: wartime Britain is evoked, as is active service in North Africa and Italy. Back in England in 1946, Hoggart went on to teach in the extra-mural department of Hull University, travelling all over north-east England. He was also beginning to make his mark as a writer. His study of W.H. Auden was followed by "The Uses of Literacy".Richard Hoggart is a well-known cultural commentator and the author of the bestselling book The Uses of Literacy. He has served on numerous government advisory bodies and was the Chairman of the National Book League. He was previously Professor of English at Birmingham.
