Sotto Voce by Paula Scollan

In this collection of fifty-two original poems (one for every week of the year) Paula Scollan explores facets of political and human experiences, invoking compassion and empathy in the reader. With eccentric twists the poems are passionate and emotional, contrasting war, poverty, loss, love and death. Many of the poems connect with the writer's daily work experience and she also experiments with trying to find a voice for those less fortunate than herself. Paula is someone who does this really well, managing not to patronise or speak down, but creating believable and memorable characters in her poems the way a fiction writer might in a novel. From contemplation of political sacrifices and the observation of the natural landscape through empathy for prisoners Sotto Voce is a book of unusual coherence and convincing claims.
Paula Scollan is a practising solicitor and she owns general practices in Leitrim and Dublin. Paula is also a legal affairs columnist with the Leitrim Observer newspaper. Her interests include human rights, travel, photography, art, film and music. She has provided a long standing and committed volunteer service with various free legal advice centres. In her previous life Paula worked in community pharmacies, methadone clinics and St Luke's oncology hospital. She studied psychology, television direction and production, worked in legal clinics in New York, worked as a criminal defence lawyer in Tallaght, worked as a current affairs monitor, taught English and dancing to nuns from the Congo, taught in the international study centre, researched the implications of health legislation in Ireland, explored the world at every possible opportunity, wrote and painted along the way.
