Southern Escapades by Zoe Cano

A classic road trip with a difference. As an encore to her recent cross-country ride, Zo calls on her loyal road dog friend to join her for part of a 2000 mile odyssey on two British retro motorbikes. Zig-zagging along the tropical Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coast in Florida, through the forgotten back roads of the Florida Panhandle, Alabama and Georgia, this adventure uncovers the many hidden gems of lesser known places in these beautiful Southern states and introduces the reader to the extraordinary people she encounters along the way. From areas of extreme wealth to dire poverty, music venues lost in time and near-misses on the road, these eclectic stories will make you shiver, cry and laugh out loud. Her curiosity for getting under the skin of America brings out a fresh new perspective for any sort of traveller.

Michael Fitterling was born in northern Indiana in 1957 and grew up in Niles, Michigan, close across the state border, where he graduated from Brandywine High School in 1975. Michael attended Anderson College in Indiana for two years before dropping out in 1978. He returned to school at the University of South Florida in 1989, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1992. Mike's family vacations throughout his childhood hinted at the world that awaited him if he just went on the road. His family has taken camping trips to over twenty states since he was a child.

Mike joined his brother on a biology and archeology trip to Central America that Anderson College had scheduled after his first year of college. The five weeks of camping in the most distant parts of Mexico and Guatemala gave his passion of travel a new dimension. Mike felt pulled to the water as time went on, so he bought a small yacht and set sail along the southeast US coast, passing through the Bahamas and Caribbean. During three summers, he led an excursion sailboat in the Cayman Islands, earning his US captain's license in 1993.

Michael returned to the United States from the Caribbean and worked as a graphic designer in central Florida. In 1997, he married Andrea and in 2000, they established a family. During this period, he developed an interest in woodworking and began working as a semi-professional woodworker. Mike had dreamed of owning a motorcycle since he was a boy, but he didn't find one until he was in his fifties, when he discovered a 1968 Honda buried away in a dusty corner of a relative's shop.

He retrieved the motorcycle and set about learning how to repair and ride it, thus beginning a new chapter in his life and providing him with a new mode of transportation. That first bike has taken him over 30,000 kilometers as of this writing. In 2012, he added a contemporary Triumph to his garage, which has since acquired similar mileage. Mike was working at Lost Classics Publishing Company as a cover designer and illustrator when he married, and eventually became the Managing Editor.

In 2010, he bought the business. When he became the proprietor of a producing company, his natural instinct was to start publishing motorcycle publications, hence the Road Dog Publications imprint was born in 2011. Mike joined the board of directors of the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club in 2013 and became Editor of Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Magazine, the official journal of the club.
