Hugh Stowell Scott (1862-1903), often known as Henry Seton Merriman, was a well-known English author. The Sowers (1896), his most popular novel, was published in thirty editions in the United Kingdom. He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and worked as an underwriter at Lloyd's of London before turning to travel and writing novels, many of which were well-received. Scott traveled to India in 1877-1878 as a visitor and based his novel Flotsam (1896) there. He was an avid traveler who shared many of his adventures with his friend and fellow author Stanley J.
