Spectator at the Theatre by Sheridan Morley

The theatrical 1990's: decade of David Hare's State of the Nation trilogy, Tony Kushner's Angels in America and Arthur Miller's Broken Glass; decade in which Broadway rediscoved itself after a 20-year British invasion and Lloyd Webber bought twelve West End theatres; when Trevor Rylance opened Shakespeare's Globe and Trevor Nunn replaced Richard Eyre at the National Theatre. In this collection of Spectator reviews written in London and New York, Sheridan Morley looks back at the hits and misses, highlights and fiascos of the 1990s in the theatre. The book also contains a brief chronicle of his directorial debut with Corin and Vanessa Redgrave.
Sheridan Morley is an award-winning arts journalist and is drama critic of The International Herald Tribune and The Spectator. He wrote for many years for The Times, has presented many television programmes about the performing arts, and for the last ten years has presented an arts show on Radio 2. He has written more than twenty books about theatre and film, including biographies of Noel Coward, David Niven and, most recently, John Gielgud.
