Summary

Originally written in 1918, this reflection on the nature of liturgical worship still stands as a guiding light for today's renewal of worship and prayer. In poetic terms, it clarifies the underlying principles and existential implications of the belief that when Christians join in the Eucharist and other liturgical celebrations, they do so as interconnected members of the one People of God.

Spirit of the Liturgy by Romano Guardini

Originally written in 1918, this reflection on the nature of liturgical worship still stands as a guiding light for today's renewal of worship and prayer. In poetic terms, it clarifies the underlying principles and existential implications of the belief that when Christians join in the Eucharist and other liturgical celebrations, they do so as interconnected members of the one People of God.

In 1910, Romano Guardini (1885-1968) was ordained as a priest. Until the Nazis evicted him in 1939, he was a professor at the University of Berlin. His sermons, books, popular lectures, and involvement in the German Catholic Youth Movement after WWII earned him international fame. His works are marked by a strong desire to know God, as well as a profound depth of thinking and a lovely perfection of language.
