Splitting The Herd by Trudy Harris

This book is a picture journey that depicts the simple way of life and challenges of the Mbenga people of the island of Corsico. The island is off the coast of Gabon in central western Africa. The island landscape has remained untouched by modern civilization. The small population exists on what they catch at sea and what the island provides. The discovery of oil in 1996 has had little impact on the island but that is beginning to change. Unfortunately, these changes will likely destroy the land and culture. It is uncertain what kind of future they will have.

In order to help the Mbenga people on the island of Corisco, a fund has been established to help modernize the small school and give opportunity to the children on the island. Anyone interested in donating can do so by writing a check to Corisco Island Fund. Please send it to: PO Box 5501, Rockville MD 20850.
