Standing Up to God by Anthony Phillips
An investigation into the biblical passages where we see the dark side of God and the challenges they pose to our faith. Standing up to God takes an unflinching look at those biblical texts which portray an apparent darkness in God's personality: Abraham is commanded to sacrifice his son: Jacob in attempting to do right wrestles with God; the servant figure is Isaiah has to die in exile on behalf of his people; Jesus dies in a tortured death with the words 'Why have you forsaken me?'. Anthony Phillips explores these stories, when the people of God found themselves facing His apparently irrational enmity, with great integrity, clarity and a sense that in this darkness a true light is to be found. A powerful and thought-provoking book; powerful because it pulis no punches in examining those biblical texts where God appears to act in a way that seems evil, thought-provoking because it challenges our preconceptions and offers surprising ways of thinking about faith.
Anthony Phillips is former Chaplain and Fellow at St John's College, Oxford and was headmaster of The King's School, Canterbury. He was also Honorary Canon of Canterbury Cathedral.
