She wrote One Thing or Your Mother, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer novel, and Once Lost, an Alias novel. She joined the Star Trek: Discovery writing staff on CBS All Access in 2016. She became one of the show's cocreators after pitching the notion for a new series centered on one of Star Trek's most beloved captains, Jean-Luc Picard. Kirsten is the primary Star Trek canon resource for the writer's rooms and production departments, as well as the connection between the series and the tie-in licensors, in addition to her writing and producing duties.

Kirsten graduated from Loyola Marymount University with bachelor's degrees in English Literature and Theater Arts and an MFA from UCLA. She and her daughter live in Los Angeles with her husband, actor and composer David Permenter.
