Steam in the East Midlands and East Anglia by Brian J Dickson
In this fascinating portrait of the changing face of the locomotive scene from the later 1930s throughout the East Midlands and East Anglia, the pre-grouping locomotive classes still working across Lincoln, Cambridge, Norfolk, Suffolk, Nottingham, Leicester, Northampton, Bedford, Hertford, Buckingham and Essex are all represented. During later LNER days, locomotives of the Great Eastern and Great Northern Railways continued working the many secondary routes and branch lines, while from 1935 the main East Coast saw the appearance of Nigel Gresley's streamlined class A4 locomotives working the high-speed passenger traffic between Edinburgh and London. The LMS influence saw many former London and North Western and Midland Railway locomotives handling both passenger and goods traffic especially the product of the many collieries in Nottinghamshire. Here, Ron Buckley's beautiful photographs and Brian Dickson's knowledgeable commentary come together to provide unrivalled insight into the region's railway heritage.
BRIAN J. DICKSON worked in the publishing and printing industries for over 35 years before retiring in 2000. He is now an active volunteer locomotive fireman and driver at a heritage railway. He has written a number of railway books and lives in Buckinghamshire. RON BUCKLEY began photographing railways at the age of 15. He joined the LM&SR as a wages clerk in 1934 and retired in 1977 giving over 42 years’ service to the railways. He continued to take photographs of trains until 2014, when he was aged 97.
