The Steampunk Gazette by Major Tinker
From a fantasy fiction genre, steampunk has grown into a broad pop culture aesthetic, with its own art, fashion, home décor, music, and events. Influenced by 19th-century steam-age industrial imagery, the Wild West, and science fiction, followers modify modern objects such as computers to resemble "path-not-taken" machines and filter fashion through a Victorian lens. The latest technologies are mixed with period styling to create a romantic, neo-Victorian, sepia-toned universe. The Steampunk Gazette chronicles this burgeoning international subculture with an illustrated newspaper-style design that reflects the vintage aesthetic. Reports from the forefront of the steampunk movement and a high percentage of specially commissioned photographs make the book a unique record of this diverse and influential movement. Steampunk's current influences on fashion, design, television drama and film will be evident from these pages. A travel news style section entitled News from Everywhere and sections on Mode, Furnishings, Gear, Science and Manufacture, Nature, Culture, Extravaganzas, and Leisure chronicle every aspect of the movement around the world in more than 750 photographs that will delight aficionados and inspire and intrigue a wider public interested in art, fashion, design, history and culture.
John Naylor (aka Major Tinker) is the founder of the Victorian Steampunk Society and one of the leading lights of the movement. He is the driving force behind The Asylum, an annual event in Lincoln that is the largest festival in Europe and attracts over 1000 visitors, and has organised exhibitions at the Kew Steam Museum and Bradford Museum. History has been his passion and work for many years. A graduate in Social Psychology and Medieval Social History, he has published serious archeological papers, and worked on historical reconstructions for major museums and television programmes for National Geographic, the Discovery channel and Channel 4. The Major is working on a documentary for BBC radio on steampunk and is consulting on a major steampunk art event in London for autumn 2012.
