Stinky Spike the Pirate Dog by Peter Meisel

Continuing the Read & Bloom line for newly independent readers comes a delightfully funny, boy-friendly series . . . Meet Stinky Spike! Ahoy! When this shipyard pup gets lost at sea, he’s rescued by a crew of stinky pirates led by Captain Fishbeard. Spike must prove to the captain he can be a real pirate. Luckily, Stinky Spike has the best nose on the seven seas, and he uses it to sniff out all kinds of treasure. But what happens when Spike’s sense of smell leads him to some very strange loot?
An ultrasilly, swashbuckling addition to the Read and Bloom line. . The plentiful full-color illustrations play up the story’s olfactory theme, which should delight those beginning readers whose sense of humor tends toward the gross-out. * Publishers Weekly *
Spike is an amiable and odoriferous crewmate for novice readers. * BCCB *
With funny characters and an engaging yet simple plotline, this will fly off the shelves. * School Library Journal *
There's a jaunty joie de vivre to Spike's love of all that reeks. A true transitional book, the text is perfect for children working their way up to full chapter books. Paul Meisel's full-color illustrations help liven up son Peter Meisel's short chapters, and the story will keep readers guessing. * Kirkus Reviews *
Paul Meisel’s full-color illustrations are equally charming and will easily attract readers to this engaging early chapter book. Father and son, Peter and Paul Meisel, have created what promises to become a popular new series. * Booklist *
Stinky Spike’s adventures will delight and engage children. The author’s use of humor and Stinky Spike’s love for the foulest smells make this book a real hit! This would definitely be a favorite for my 6 year old! -- Kendra Hall-Kenyon, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education, Brigham Young University
Read & Bloom will be wildly popular. And I am very happy to see some new friendship books come along with the end of the Elephant and Piggie books. -- Teri Lesesne, Professor of Library Science at Sam Houston State University
Funny and appealing, the Read & Bloom books will charm readers. -- Linda M. Pavonetti, Ed.D., professor of Reading and Language Arts at Oakland University
This imaginary rumpus is just right for beginners to successfully read and reread. * Kirkus Reviews on SEE ME RUN by Paul Meisel *
