The Stories of the Lotus Sutra by Gene Reeves

Stories are ancient and wondrous tools with the mysterious power to transform lives. And the stories and parables of the Lotus Sutra-one of the world's great religious scriptures and most influential texts-are among the most fascinating and dramatic.

In this fun, engaging, and plain-English book, Gene Reeves-the translator of Wisdom's critically acclaimed and bestselling edition of the Lotus Sutra-presents the most memorable and remarkable of the Lotus Sutra's many stories and parables, along with a distillation of his decades of reflection on them in an accessible, inspiring, and naturally illuminating way.

The Stories of the Lotus Sutra is the perfect companion to Reeve's breathtaking translation of this scriptural masterpiece as well as a thoroughly enjoyable stand-alone volume for those who want to bring the inspiring teachings of the bodhisattva path into their daily lives.

Gene Reeves is a Buddhist scholar and teacher, as well as a process philosopher and theologian, who has spent over 23 years in Tokyo studying, teaching, and practicing Lotus Sutra Buddhism. He is the founder of the World Buddhist Congregation, which is part of the much larger Rissho Kosei-kai lay Buddhist organization and has its headquarters in Tokyo. He is the author of The Lotus Sutra: A Modern Translation of a Buddhist Classic, which he translated from Chinese to English. The Tales of the Lotus Sutra is his most recent publication. In 2002, he edited A Buddhist Kaleidoscope: Writings on the Lotus Sutra, which was released.

Reeves is currently working on a book called A Buddhist Natural Theology, which aims to connect A.N. The Lotus Sutra Buddhism of Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne. Reeves is a popular speaker on the Lotus Sutra and Chinese Buddhism in Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and the United States, and a regular contributor to the magazine Dharma World. He retired from Renmin University of China in Beijing in 2012 as a distinguished professor, but he continues to conduct field research on modern Chinese Buddhism in China and serves as an International Adviser at Rissho Kosei-kai in Japan.

He has taught at Tsukuba University in Japan, Peking University in China, the University of Chicago and Meadville Lombard Theological School, Wilberforce University, and Tufts University in the United States. Reeves graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in psychology, Boston University with a degree in theology, and Emory University with a PhD in philosophy. He was born and reared in a tiny factory town in New Hampshire. In addition to his Buddhist interests, Reeves has been involved in civil rights issues for over 50 years, including working with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Chicago Mayor Harold Washington. Reeves has houses in Tokyo and Chicago, and is married to Yayoi Reeves.

He has two adult daughters in the United States who live and work there.
