Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger

'Out of the hideously scarred soil of Flanders rose black, splintered trunks of trees' In one of the greatest war memoirs ever written, an ordinary German soldier recalls the horror and bloodlust of combat on the Western Front with brutal, unflinching candour and stark simplicity. Ten new titles in the colourful, small-format, portable new Pocket Penguins series
Ernst Jünger, the son of a wealthy chemist, ran away from home to join the Foreign Legion. His father dragged him back, but he returned to military service when he joined the German army on the outbreak of the First World War. Storm of Steel was Jünger's first book, published in 1920. Jünger died in 1998.
