The Story of America by Allen Weinstein

This text presents the history of the United States not as an endless parade of specific facts but as a story with twists and turns, heroes and villains, saints and sinners, and even some comic relief. Historians Allen Weinstein and David Rubel narrate American history from Columbus to the present as Americans actually lived it (not as you studied it in school). Each of the 26 chapters presents a particular historical episode - the Lewis and Clark expedition, for example, or the Cuban Missile Crisis - while exploring the most important themes in US history connected to that episode. Also included are two dozen American profiles written by other leading historians, featuring figures such as Supreme Court justice John Marshall, President Theodore Roosevelt and playwright Lillian Hellman.
Allen Weinstein is president of the Centre for Democracy and a winner of the United Nations Peace Medal. He chaired the American studies Program and has written several books, including Perjury: The Hiss-Chambers Case. He is based in Washington. David Rubel has edited numerous works of American history, including The Scholastic Encyclopedia of the Presidents and Their Times. He is president of Agincourt Press and appears regularly on North East Public Radio. He is based in New York.
