Story of Britain,The by Strong Roy

The Story of Britain is a significant book published at a significant moment, for there can rarely have been a time when public concern about history and the teaching of history has created so much controversy and debate. Sir Roy Strong, author, broadcaster, former Director of the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum, tells the story of Britain from the very earliest recorded Celtic times to the era of Margaret Thatcher. Featuring illustrated double-page spreads arranged by subject, he tells the story as a continuous narrative in chapters which give meaning and purpose to the periods they consider. It is a tremendous story, and Roy Strong, with his passion, enthusiasm and wide-ranging knowledge, is the ideal person to tell it.
"A remarkable achievement.. His book should be read by anyone, anywhere, who cares about Britain's national past, national identity or national prospects" -- David Cannadine Independent on Sunday "Our forebears had the Bible and Pilgrim's Progress. We have Stephen Hawking and Delia Smith. This book, for British people, has that kind of status. It is an instant classic... I have been reading it with unalloyed admiration and delight" -- A.N. Wilson Evening Standard "Elegantly written, beautifully illustrated and scrupulously fair... Classic popular history" -- Andrew Roberts Mail on Sunday "His narratives stream along, his judgements are sharp and generally fair... Essential reading" -- Linda Colley The Times "A triumph... The Story of Britain succeeds better thatn any other contemporary survey in conveying a sense of British identity" -- Amanda Foreman Independent
Sir Roy Strong was director of the National Portrait Gallery from 1967 to 1971 and director of the Victoria & Albert Museum from 1974 to 1987, when he became a full-time writer, broadcaster and consultant. His books include Visions of England, The Arts in Britain, Coronation: A History of Kingship and the British Monarchy and, most recently, A Little History of the English Country Church.
