The Story of the Matthew Bible by Ruth Magnusson Davis

Based on new research, Part 2 of The Story of the Matthew Bible weaves forgotten history together with forgotten teachings from the Matthew Bible, and reveals the hidden roots of changes made to the Scriptures since the Reformation of the 16th century.

Part 1, The Story of the Matthew Bible: That Which We First Received, was R. Davis's definitive account of the making of the Matthew Bible, which was compiled and published in Antwerp by John Rogers in 1537, and which contained the original translations of William Tyndale and Myles Coverdale. In this Part 2, Davis looks at revisions to these translations over the past five centuries - especially, because of their scope and influence, revisions introduced in the Geneva Bible (1560, 1599) and the Revised Version (1894).

The surprising scope of changes considered: Wide-ranging revisions touch on the New Covenant, the church, messianic prophecy, the deity of Christ, Antichrist, sin, hell, the flesh, the cross, the resurrection, and the means of salvation - as well as music, praise, ceremonies, protection for women and virgins, slavery, rulers, revolution, obedience, and more. Comparative Scripture verses are clearly laid out, so readers can see and judge for themselves.

Modern scholarship challenged: Davis lines up the masters, including Cranmer, Luther, Purvey, and Jerome, against modern scholars who say the Antwerp translations were immature, inaccurate, and even clotted - who adorn the sepulchres of the Matthew men, but discredit their work. By the end of this book, readers will understand the translators' work and will appreciate its excellence.

Lost notes re-discovered: Readers will get to know John Rogers' learned marginal notes in the Matthew Bible. An illuminating appendix compares his notes expounding Hebrew idioms in Genesis with the Geneva Bible notes on the same verses.

The record corrected: Scholarly and yet accessible for all readers, this much-needed book is a monument to the faithfulness of the Scriptures we first received, and to the only English Bible that was bought with blood.
