David Rothman gives us a brilliant, finely etched study of medical practice todayAt Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, David J. Rothman is the Bernard Schoenberg Professor of Social Medicine, Professor of History, and Director of the Center for the Study of Society and Medicine. He has studied American behaviors toward the deviant and dependent after receiving a social history education at Harvard University. The John Jay School of Criminal Justice awarded him an honorary Doctor of Law degree in 1987. He joined the faculty of Columbia Medical School in 1983, and his latest research has focused on the history of bioethics and human experimentation, as well as the social policy implications of organ donation and end-of-life care. The Discovery of the Asylum (1971) and Strangers at the Bedside (1991) are two of his novels. He was also a co-author of The Oxford History of the Prison, which was published in 1995.
