The Strangled Traveler by Martine Van Woerkens
British colonists in 1830's India lived in terror of the thugs. Reputed to be brutal criminals, the Thugs supposedly strangled and robbed thousands of travellers in the name of the goddess, Kali. Did the Thugs really exist? Or were they yet more colonial imaginings?
Martine van Woerkens is a researcher at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Section des Sciences Religieuses, Paris. She is the author of numerous articles on the status of women in India, on Indian cinema, and on colonial literature and anthropology. Catherine Tihanyi is a research associate in the Department of Anthropology at Western Washington University.
