Pasolini's novel was heavily censored, criticized by professional critics, and lambasted by much of the general public upon its publication. But its undeniable force and vitality eventually led to it being universally acknowledged as a masterpiece.

Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922–75) was an Italian film director, poet, and writer who was also one of his generation's most outspoken and provocative intellectuals. Mauro Bolognini, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Franco Rossi were among his collaborators. He was a prolific essayist and campaigner, as well as the author of Matthew and Decameron. In 1975, he was assassinated.
