Stronger Than Death by Manda Scott

Sometimes tragedies come in waves. First Eric, irrepressible, indestructible, climbing alone. Second Joey choking, drunk - though not much more so than usual - the night after his great triumph. But then there was the statistician, overdosing on Flatliners he thought were something else. Three is a series, not a coincidence: three men dead, three colleagues with a shared past. A past that is shared by the one person Kellen Stewart would trust with her life, pathologist Lee Adams. Suspect number one.
Val McDermid: 'Highly charged, dramatic, chilling, atmospheric and beautifully written' 'Stronger Than Death grips like a stranglehold' 'With Stronger Than Death, Manda Scott establishes herself in the front rank of contemporary crime fiction' 'Pure dead brilliantManda Scott is a killer writer' Andrew Greig: 'I was moved and impressed and utterly absorbed. Unlike most crime writing, it feels like it's about life, about reality. It takes death seriously, is people by characters with inner lives... It's a novel that happens to have murder in it. She writes wonderfully well about climbing, the sense of panic held at finger's length. My heart beat faster, head turned, stomach lurched as I read that opening chapter - and the book never let up after that. I couldn't stop reading it, simple as that. And I believed it. It has the readability of genre and the seriousness of purpose, the validity, of literature... It's a fine book, one that transcends genre labelling. In the end it's about rage, trust, loyalty and death...' 'Scott's writing is powerful and subtle, her characters have depth, the plot is impeccable and original, and the shiver-count high. Her first two novels were impressive; STRONGER THAN DEATH propels her into the front rank of British crime writers' Marcel Berlins, Times Metro Note from publicity: This completely brilliant novel has received excellent serial, feature and review coverage. 'Scott's writing is powerful and subtle, her characters have depth, the plot is impeccable and original, and the shiver-count high...Stronger than Death propels her into the front rank of British crime writers.' The Times '...a quirky and compelling read.'Mail on Sunday '...powerful and gripping...' The Guardian '...a stylish voice, unusually poetic for crime fiction...Stronger than Death is as much about the strengths and weaknesses of loving friendships as it is about murder. It's a theme which recalls the charismatic males - Lymond or Niccolo - of Dorothy Dunnet's novels.'Scotland on Sunday The Scotsman took an extract of the first chapter which ran on publication The Big Issue in Scotland ran a full page interview just before publication The Herald interviewed Manda for their culture magazine, The Mix, which ran mid November 'Powerful and gripping' Guardian 'Beautifully cadenced prose that rivets the reader. Probably the best read of this autumn's crop' Val McDermid, Manchester Evening News 'Scott is fast becoming a master of accessible but multi-layered fiction' Big Issue 'A skill that leaves her readers powerless to resist' The List 'Scott is fast becoming a master of accessible but multi-layered fiction' -- Big Issue 'With Stronger Than Death, Manda Scott establishes herself in the front rank of contemporary crime fiction' -- Val McDermid 'I couldn't stop reading it, simple as that.
