Stephen Taylor was born in 1948 in South Africa and grew up in the Johannesburg area. He moved to Britain at the age of twenty-two and spent four years traveling in the Middle East and South Asia. He worked as a foreign reporter for The Times and the Observer in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Australia from 1980 to 1987. Shaka's Children: a History of the Zulu People was his first work, and it was followed by Shaka's Children: a History of the Zulu People. He is married with two children and works for The New York Times.
