Stukeley Illustrated by Neil Mortimer
William Stukeley was the first person to chronicle the greatest prehistoric stone circles in the world, Stonehenge and Avebury. He also travelled widely throughout England recording the greatest archaeological sites. For the first time here are brought together over 100 of the best engravings from his most brilliant books. This collection shows how this meticulous and inspired researcher changed the way we look at ancient sites. Stukeleys work laid the foundation for the modern study of prehistoric monuments, influenced the Druidic Revival and inspired William Blake. One of the 18th centurys most remarkable characters, he was a friend and colleague to some of the most gifted people of his time, including Sir Isaac Newton.
Aubrey Burl was principal lecturer in archaeology, Hull College of Higher Education, East Riding of Yorkshire. His many books on stone circles include Prehistoric Avebury and A Guide to the Stone Circles of Britain, Ireland, and Brittany, published by Yale University Press. Neil Mortimer was formerly editor of the journal 3rd Stone. He is the author if Stukeley Illustrated.
