Stylish & Simple Mosaic by Emma Biggs
Mosaic is an ancient and versatile craft that can be used to transform almost any plain surface into a unique piece of art. As well as the traditional glass smalti and tesserae used by mosaicists for centuries, broken pottery, pebbles, and other natural materials can be used in today's designs. Using their combined experience as artists and teachers, Emma Biggs and Tessa Hunkin show how even a complete beginner can master basic mosaic techniques. They then explain the use of colour, pattern, and texture using as examples pieces they designed for public and private spaces. Simple and Stylish Mosaic is packed with ideas and inspiration for over 30 contemporary designs for the whole house, including a colourful animal frieze for a child's bedroom, a graphic fish splashback to brighten a dark bathroom, and the perfect garden table for outdoor entertaining.Emma Biggs is a professional mosaic artist. She set up the influential company Mosaic Workshop in 1987, which went on to be the UK's most thriving mosaic studio. She has been working solo since 2006. Emma's work is most closely associated with an interest in colour and pattern. She is currently working for an exhibition of work 'CUT' – to be shown in 2014. She began as a fabricator and mosaic maker for architectural contexts but her personal work has increasingly focused on material culture and the social history of making.
Tessa Hunkin trained and worked as an architect until 1989 when she joined Emma Biggs at the recently founded Mosaic Workshop in Holloway, North London. Mosaic offered a way of developing a lifelong interest in colour and decoration while still working in an architectural context.
