Suite 'Laudate Dominum' by Peter Hurford
Each of the six movements of this fine suite is an exquisite character sketch based on a Psalm text. The movements are easily diverse enough to make the entire suite a very satisfying, and indeed virtuosic, recital piece. The highly original language is replete with piquant harmonies and bracing rhythms, and the composer explores a wide variety of organ texture with great deftness.
Peter Hurford was born in Minehead, Somerset, and studied initially with Harold Darke. He read both music and law at Jesus College, Cambridge University, subsequently obtaining an enviable reputation for both musical scholarship and organ playing. Hurford was appointed organist and choirmaster at St Albans Cathedral in 1958, serving with great distinction in this capacity for twenty years. As well as an organist, he is also renowned as a composer of organ works and choral pieces. Mostly dating from his St. Albans years, some of them are flowingly lyrical while others are joyously animated. All reflect Hurford's skill and inclinations as an improviser.
