The Summer of '56 by Roderick Heather

This is the story of the author's early childhood, mostly set in the provincial Midlands town of Leamington Spa. The book covers the first twenty formative years of the author's life from 1944 to 1964. As Britain emerged from the trauma of World War I, the late 1940s and early 1950s were a period of austerity and rationing. Although living standards for many were gradually rising, life for the poor or disadvantaged could be very hard.

With a divorced mother and a younger sister with Down's syndrome, the author found that his family were largely shunned and unsupported by the local community due to deep prejudice and a lack of sympathy. This story of poverty and ahrdship, fun and friendship, hope and disappointment is told with a balance of humour and pathos.

Heather, Roderick: - Following an honours degree in Economics from Sheffield University, the author spent almost thirty years working for various manufacturing businesses in the UK and overseas. In 1995 he moved to Tatarstan in Russia, leading a team of international consultants at a large automotive company and in 1997 he became an advisor to the UK Foreign Office and the Department for International Development covering Russia until 2002. He subsequently worked as a management consultant on various projects in Russia and Ukraine and since 2001, he has been a member of the Flood Risk Management Committee for Wales. Born in Royal Leamington Spa, the author spent his early years in Canada and has since lived in Switzerland, France, the USA and Russia and has travelled to seventy different countries. He was awarded an MBE in the 2018 Queen's New years Honours List.
