Summer of the Gods by Edward J Larson

The Pulitzer Prize-winning book that is quite simply the best book ever written on the Scopes Trial and its place in American history and myth.In the summer of 1925, the sleepy hamlet of Dayton, Tennessee, became the setting for one of the twentieth century's most contentious dramas: the Scopes trial that pitted William Jennings Bryan and the anti-Darwinists against a teacher named John Scopes in a famous debate over science, religion, and their place in public education. That trial marked the start of a battle that continues to this day--in Kansas; Dover, Pennsylvania; Cobb County, Georgia; and many other cities and states throughout the country.Edward Larson's classic, Summer for the Gods, received the Pulitzer Prize in History in 1998 and is the single most authoritative account of a pivotal event whose combatants remain at odds in school districts and courtrooms. For this edition, Larson has added a new preface that assesses the state of the battle between creationism and evolution and points the way to how it might potentially be resolved.

Edward J. Larson is the author of seven books, including Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Ongoing Struggle Over Science and Religion, which won the Pulitzer Prize in History in 1998. Darwinism: A Fascinating History of a Scientific Idea, Evolution's Workshop, God and Science on the Galapagos Islands, and Trial and Error: The American Debate Over Creation and Evolution are among his other works. Larson has also published over a hundred essays, the most of which take a historical approach to law, science, or politics, and have appeared in publications such as The Atlantic, Nature, Scientific American, The Nation, The Wilson Quarterly, and the Virginia Law Review. He is a history and law professor at Pepperdine University and splits his time between Georgia and California.
