Surrealist Love Poems by Mary Ann Ed Caws

Published to accompany Tate Modern's major exhibition Surrealism: Desire Unbound in September 2001, this beautifully illustrated gift book is a collection of sixty poems by some of the most important Surrealists - both male and female - of the twentieth century. It includes, for example the French poet Robert Desnos whose love poems rank among the greatest in the world, as well as introducing less familiar voices. With many poems translated into English for the first time, this collection is both an important document of Surrealist literature and a journey into the condition of love in its many guises.
Mary Ann Caws is a distinguished writer and translator who lives and works in New York. Her special interest is the relationship between art and text. She is the author of Surrealist Painters and Poets (MIT, 2000) and Manifesto! A Century of Isms (Nebraska, 2000).
