Summary

What do earthquakes, magma, asteroid 1950DA, and global warming have in common? This book provides solutions rather than problems to natural and man-made disasters that threaten our planet. It concludes with ways to use technology to protect our society from global catastrophe, as well as to foster an environment where life on earth can thrive.

Surviving Armageddon by Bill Mcguire

The Asian tsunami of December 2004 killed a third of a million people, and made the Earth wobble slightly on its axis. The world was shocked. Yet we know that such massive catastrophes have happened many times before in Earth's history.Could a natural disaster of this magnitude happen again? Certainly. It is only a question of when. And earthquakes and volcanic eruptions aren't the only natural hazards that face us: we have only just begun to monitor the rocks in space that might be coming our way, and some of us have yet to wake up to the dangers of global warming. Can we survive? Yes, replies Bill McGuire. In Surviving Armageddon he guides us through the latest approaches being researched to prevent global catastrophes, or at least to minimise their effect. Solutions range from the bizarre - filling the stratosphere with millions of tiny reflective balloons to block the sun's rays, to the realistic - the lubrication of earthquake faults, the capture and storage of atmospheric carbon dioxide, and rockets to nudge asteroids off collision courses with the Earth. Bill McGuire argues that we can make a genuine bid to get through what nature throws at us - providing we take the risks seriously.
Surviving Armageddon is a somewhat boisterous rompRead. And then have a strong drink. Sir Crispin Tickell 'a book that should be read by anyone who is concerned about the future of the world in which we all live' Sir Patrick Moore, Times Higher Education Supplement

Bill McGuire is an academic, science writer and broadcaster. He is currently Professor of Geophysical and Climate Hazards at UCL. Bill was a member of the UK Government Natural Hazard Working Group established in January 2005, in the wake of the Indian Ocean tsunami, and in 2010 a member of the
Science Advisory Group in Emergencies (SAGE) addressing the Icelandic volcanic ash problem. His current research focus is the climate forcing of geological hazards. His books include Natural Hazards & Environmental Change, A Guide to the End of the World: Everything you Never Wanted to Know,
Surviving Armageddon: Solutions for a Threatened Planet and - most recently - Seven Years to Save the Planet. He presented the BBC Radio 4 series, Disasters in Waiting and Scientists Under Pressure and the End of the World Reports on Channel 5 and Sky News.
