Tadhg Kennelly by Scott Gullan

This is the story of Ireland's most successful Australian Rules footballer. Born in Listowel, County Kerry, Tadhg Kennelly is the son of a Kerry football star and grew up playing GAA both for local and county teams. Having played at inter-county level for Kerry from an early age, in 1999 he made the momentous decision to move to Australia to play Aussie Rules football. He debuted for the Sydney Swans in 2001 and went on to become one of their star players. In 2005 he won an AFL Premiership medal with the Swans, the first Irishman to do so. He was plagued with injury throughout his final season in Australia, demonstrating a disconcerting tendency to pop his often dislocated shoulder back into place on the pitch during matches, but through both his columns on the Sydney Swans website and the attention lavished on him by Australian broadcasters, Tadhg retained a high profile in Australia. In 2009 he returned to Ireland and joined the Kerry County panel.
Tadhg Kennelly was born in Listowel in 1981. He is the son of Tim Kennelly, a former All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winner with Kerry. After his debut in 2001, he became a permanent fixture in the Sydney line-up as a dashing rebound defender, wearing the no. 17 jersey. Co-written with Scott Gullan who is an award-winning sports writer for Melbourne's Herald Sun, Australia's best-selling newspaper. He has written two books, the first being the best-selling autobiography with Olympic champion Cathy Freeman, Cathy, Her Own Story.
