Talavera by Peter Edwards
Wellington's first battle in the Iberian Peninsula involved around 19,000 French and British troops, whereas at Waterloo seven years later there were one third of a million. In between, the British Army and its commander ascended a steep learning curve.
Peter Edwards was commissioned into the Northamptonshire Regiment (previously the 48th Foot], and his interest in Talavera stems from the fact that the regimental cap badge wore their prime battle honour. Subsequently he commanded the Officer Training Corps at Bristol University.
