Elizabeth Gillard was born in Cheltenham, educated at the Ladies' College, and trained as a nurse in the sixties. A variety of jobs has included farm secretary, nursing sister, and business administrator. Married, with two sons and four grandchildren, she and her husband live in a Wiltshire village.
