Tales from the Tyne by Richard E Keys
"Tales from the Tyne" features true stories from the days when the Tyne was one of Britain's busiest ports at the heart of the great North-East coalfield. Highlighting the rivers' shipping history, the book includes chapters on the passenger steamers, which linked Newcastle with London, the hard-working tugs, the floating hospital and the ever-busy coal staithes where collier ships loaded a seemingly never-ending stream of 'black diamonds'.
Dick Keys is a retired merchant seaman and North-East maritime historian. He is author of many books, including a Dictionary of Sailing Ships. Ken Smith is a writer of maritime history of the Tyne and a sub editor on the Journal, Newcastle.
