Tall Tales for Travellers by Michael M Roe
Tall tales for travellers is a book of eighteen short stories based mainly on travel experiences. It is a sympathetic and at times a bemused look at human foibles, misunderstandings, and cultural differences. Eleven of the stories relate to incidences involving characters from different parts of the world and the book includes tales from Austalia, the Middle East, several European countries, Africa, the Caribbean and North America. The stories are designed to appeal to those with an international outlook and especially to travellers who have experienced the weariness and boredom of long distance flights. The idea is that the book should be light reading, easily picked up and put down, thereby allowing the reader to pause for a snooze or avoid the necessity of having to engage in conversation the person in the next seat.R.Michael Roe, Ph.D., is a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Entomology and Environmental and Molecular Toxicology at North Carolina State University (NCSU) in Raleigh, North Carolina, and was chosen as a Fellow in 2012. He is known for his work in insect and acarine physiology, biochemistry, genomics, and toxicity, as well as his use of fundamental chemistry, nuclear science, and biology research to solve practical challenges and build new commercial products. Dr. Roe was born in 1952 in Plaquemine, Louisiana, and graduated from high school in 1970. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in science. In 1974, he earned a bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in chemistry from Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge.
He completed his graduate studies at LSU, earning a master's degree in science. In 1976, he earned a bachelor's degree in physiology with a minor in biochemistry and a doctorate in physiology. In 1981, he earned a bachelor's degree in entomology with a minor in nuclear science. From 1981 to 1984, he was a National Institutes of Health (NIH) fellow in Cellular and Molecular Biology in the department of entomology in the University of California at Davis, and in 1984, he accepted a job as an assistant professor of entomology at North Carolina State University, Raleigh.
Dr. Roe's group is interested in learning how insect and acarine systems work at the molecular level, using synthetic organic chemistry to explore structure-activity relationships, and applying bioassay, chemistry, molecular biology, and physics to tackle real pest problems in the context of integrated pest management. Dr. Roe is particularly interested in the effects of environmental chemicals on human health, with a particular focus on global gene expression and epigenetics in basic human cells, risk assessment, and mechanism of action. His lab specializes in product development and technology transfer. Among his many achievements are a US EPA-registered insect and tick repellent that is more effective than DEET and a fast-acting, natural broad-spectrum herbicide.
Dr. Roe has worked at NCSU for almost 30 years and is a prolific author with over 250 articles published, eight books published, 36 patents issued, and ten leased inventions. He has spoken at more than 40 scientific conferences throughout the world and has organized several national and international scientific meetings. He is the president of InTox Biotech in Middlesex, North Carolina, and has served on the advisory boards of various companies and non-profit organizations in the United States. Dr. Roe is also a founding member of NCSU's interdepartmental Biotechnology Program, which offers hands-on molecular methods courses and a Biotechnology minor, and has created new NCSU courses in physiology, insect morphology, molecular entomology, toxicity, and professional development.
Dr. Roe has won numerous accolades for his achievements. His greatest professional achievements and satisfaction, however, are the more than 50 graduate students he has educated as a committee adviser with M.S. NCSU also offers Ph.D. programs in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Nuclear Engineering, Physiology, Toxicology, Biology, Textile Science, and Entomology. In addition, he has mentored approximately 20 postdoctoral researchers.
His postdoctoral students and graduates have gone on to successful positions in academia, industry, and government in the United States and around the world. Dr. Roe is married to Janet (Richard) Roe, and they have two children: Jonathan and Jennifer. Work on his farm east of Raleigh, repairs on his MG, camping, and surf fishing off the coast of North Carolina are some of his favorite pastimes.
