Elliot Liebow was a well-known anthropologist and sociologist who wrote Tally's Corner and Tell Them Who I Am: The Lives of Homeless Women, among other works. Liebow, a graduate of George Washington University, the University of Maryland, and Catholic University, worked as the chief of the Center for the Study of Work and Mental Health at the National Institute of Mental Health for many years before volunteering at a women's homeless shelter. He was assigned to the Patrick Cardinal O'Boyle Professorship at Catholic University's National Catholic School for Social Service in 1990, a position he held until his death in 1994.Liebow was the recipient of various accolades and honors during his career. John W. Smith of the National Coalition to End Homelessness is one of them. The Macy Award, the Catholic University of America's President's Medal, and the Association for the Study of Social Issues' Lee Founders Award
