Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes within and relating to living organisms. Biochemical processes give rise to complexity of life. Biochemistry deals with the structures, functions and interactions of biological macromolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids, which provide the structure of cells and perform many functions of life. This book offers a comprehensive coverage of biochemical systems, structures, and metabolic reactions within the organism while emphasizing on the nutritional aspects of biochemicals. The chapters are designed such that it covers all the concepts from the basic to the complex, to help the students understand key concepts and appreciate the significant connections among biochemistry, physiology, nutrition and human health. The book is particularly meant for the students from undergraduate and postgraduate courses in life sciences, health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences and other related fields, since it gives fundamental knowledge of biochemistry and explains well the metabolic and physiological roles of biomolecules.

Abhilasha Shourie is Professor & Head, Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Manav Rachna International Institute of Research & Studies, Faridabad. She is also Director, TrichoAgronica Pvt. Ltd. She has 14 years of experience in academia and research and has been awarded Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Teaching Excellence Award in 2017. She obtained her Doctoral degree in Botany in 2006 from MDS University, Ajmer, Rajasthan. She has published more than 25 research papers in peer reviewed journals of national & international repute. She has authored two books: Bioanalytical Techniques, and Elements of Biotechnology. She has also authored PG courses in Analytical Chemistry for ePG Pathshala —an open learning portal by Inflibnet— UGC.

Shilpa S. Chapadgaonkar is Associate Professor in Department of Biotechnology, and Head of Molecular Biosciences Research Cluster at Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies, Faridabad. She has guided many PhD as well as postgraduate research projects and has authored numerous research papers. She has a patent for development of a novel process for production of biopharmaceuticals. Dr. Shilpa has a graduate degree in Pharmacy from University Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Nagpur University and MSc (Tech) in Bioprocess Technology from Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai. She obtained her PhD degree from Indian Institute of Technology in the field of Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology.

Anamika Singh is Assistant Professor in Department of Botany, Maitreyi College, University of Delhi. She has Master’s degree in Botany from University of Allahabad and obtained PhD in Bioinformatics from Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A). She has almost eight years teaching experience. Dr. Singh is member of Indian Bioinformatics Society, International Society for Infectious Diseases, APBioNet, European Federation of Biotechnology and IAENG.
