Purchase, Peter: - Peter Purchase was born and educated in East Africa. In his novel, The Glass Cenotaph, he draws on his 30 years of experience working among Indigenous First Nations people in the Pilbara, Arnhem Land and Papua New Guinea. Growing up in British colonial Kenya in the 1950s during the Mau Mau war of independence, he was alerted to the resentments that drive subjugated Indigenous populations to fight for their freedom. He migrated to Australia in 1963. Working in remote locations in the mining and construction industries brought him into close contact with local Aboriginal populations. His writing is motivated not only by an awareness of the history of the mistreatment and displacement of Australia's Indigenous people but also by their fascinating culture, deep-rooted in a love of country, resilience and an unfailing sense of humour. Peter eventually settled in Perth. He has a daughter who is a photographer and a son who works in the mining industry.
