The Art of the Signwriters by Aj Lewery

Within the practiced skill of the signwriter are elements of design and decoration that have been popular for generations, with roots leading back to ancient gravestones and medieval heraldry. This book takes a fresh look at traditional lettering styles, with all their associated paraphernalia of blocking and shadowing, as well as examining the broader palette of scrolls, ribbons and gold leaf that are still evident on many canal boats, lorries, shop fronts, pubs, and fairgrounds today.
A. J. Lewery studied painting at Brighton Art College. He works in a mixture of trades, including theatre design, coach painting, signwriting and lecturing as well as writing. He is especially interested in the techniques that fall between academic fine art and the practiced skills of the working painter, whether on pub signs, canal boats or shop fronts, and believes they are an important part of popular culture. Tony is the author of The Art of the Narrow Boat Painters, also published by David & Charles. He lives in Ellesmere, Salop.
