The outbreak of war in 1914 marked the disappearance of the colourful uniforms which had distinguished the regiments of the British Army for some three hundred years. The splendid full dress uniforms of the British Army, now so rarely seen, were a familiar sight prior to the Great War. Once, a soldier's unit or branch of the service could be recognised from his dress: the colour of his tunic, the shape of his head-dress, the presence or otherwise of characteristic embroidery, cords and chains.
