Norman Thelwell worked as a political cartoonist for the News Chronicle, then the Sunday Express and Tatler, and produced over 1,600 cartoons to Punch magazine. He was a founding member of the British Cartoonists' Association and was well-known for his cartoons on horseback riding, fishing, sailing, motoring, and English rural life.
