TheRemains of the Dead by Michelle Angharad Pashley
The sequence to the popular crime novel, Black Sheep Cottage.
With her second novel The Remains of the Dead, Michelle Angharad Pashley establishes herself as one of the more interesting new voices in the crime thriller genreThe novel keeps you interested throughout, and the pace is just right. Even for someone whose first pick for a book would not necessarily be a crime thriller, this is a very engaging and satisfying read, and more experienced crime thriller readers will also thoroughly enjoy it.; The main character is Madeline Driscoll, a Detective Inspector who has just been transferred to what should have been a quiet town, yet she immediately finds herself dealing with a child abduction case. There are a number of clues to go on, but will they be enough to find the child? And what about the dead body of another child that a dog finds buried nearby underneath a tree? How do the pieces fit together in a puzzle that Madeline seems unable to solve?; The dialogue really stands out, with Pashley bringing her characters so vividly to life that some of them almost jump off the page. You can see them in your imagination, despite the fact that she doesn't physically describe them. Each one of them has a clear voice that is unique to them. Pashley has created some great characters. Madeline is just what you want from a female lead character in a novel. She is smart and funny, and you really root for her, especially because she gets to prove her worth in this new job after not being taken seriously as a woman in her previous one. Then there's Guy Richards, the reporter who is also secretly trying to solve the mystery of the abducted child; and Rose, Madeline's colleague who helps her on the case. All the suspects are interesting characters with their own secrets, which is exactly what you need for the story to remain exciting.; Though the book deals with serious topics, Pashley also creates some lighter and funnier sequences. These light moments perfectly balance with the darker bits, and they are never inappropriate, which is an accomplishment in itself. She also makes you think about what it means to be guilty of a crime. Many of the characters in the book are flawed and have made mistakes, but Pashley makes you realise that things are often not just black and white. Sometimes people have their own reasons for doing something bad, reasons that are too tragic to imagine.; Another thing that made reading this novel such an enjoyable experience was the fact that while reading it, you keep thinking you know what's going on, but often things turn out to be quite different. Pashley holds the reader's interest throughout, which is exactly what you want and expect from a crime thriller. I'm sure we can expect more from this great new author, and I for one am looking forward to whatever comes next. -- Femke Montagne
