The sport of boxing is dying in a last explosion of dollars. Its beleaguered performers are reaching up for a last payday with bravery, one-liners and self-delusion. But as it proceeds, the arc lights begin to shift, until even the shadows in the minds of those who inhabit and surround the ring seem caught in their glare.
Jonathan Rendall was born in 1964. He studied at Oxford, where he represented the university, unsuccessfully, at boxing. He wrote for the Guardian, Independent, The Times, Ring and Esquire and won the prestigious Somerset Maugham Award for This Bloody Mary. He died in 2013.
