The Throat by Peter Straub
A magnificent tale of dark mystery and psychological suspense from the acclaimed author of The Talisman and Mr X. First published in 1993 and now reissued in a new cover. Writer Tim Underhill, the haunted Vietnam-vet hero of Koko, has been summoned by childhood friend John Ransom to his home town of Millhaven, the site of old horrors now plagued by new demons. After decades of silence, it appears that the Blue Rose killer has struck again – brutally murdering Ransom’s wife. Assisted in his search for the truth by the reclusive amateur detective Tom Pasmore, Underhill is swiftly drawn into a dark labyrinth of lies and deceit, each turn punctuated by jolting shocks, leading inexorably back to the terrors of his own past – to mysterious events in the jungles of Vietnam; to the day he witnessed the killing of his young sister; and to the ensuing series of murders that rocked the city.‘Grips like an anaconda from hell’ Time Out
‘A masterpiece of concealment and revelation, the most intelligent novel of suspense to come along in years.’ Washington Post
‘Gripping and many-layered enough to hook even readers who never sample horror novels. Think of a high-quality Twin Peaks, only deeper and far better plotted. Straub matches Stephen King’s feel for the real America.’ Daily Mail
‘A classic mystery.’ New York Times
Peter Straub was born in Milwaukee, and is the author of fourteen novels, including Ghost Story and The Talisman (with Stephen King). He has won the British Fantasy Award, two Bram Stoker Awards, the International Horror Guild Award and two World Fantasy Awards, and was elected Grand Master at the 1998 World Horror Convention.
