Tia Isa Quiere Un Carro by Meg Medina
A little girl pitches in to help her tía save up for a car and take the whole family to the beach.Tía Isa quiere un carro brillante que sea del mismo color verde del océano.
While Tía Isa wants to save money for a car that will take the whole family to the beach, her niece does odd jobs for neighbors. But it's hard to save enough when half the money is set aside to bring family members who live far away to join them someday. Meg Medina's simple, genuine story about keeping in mind those who are far away is written in lovely, lyrical prose and brought to life through Claudio Muñoz's charming characters.
Years ago, while I was in school, a girl in a rabbit-fur jacket surrounded me in the school yard and announced that one of our school bullies, a Latina girl named Jackie, was coming to beat me up, she says in Yaqui Delgado Wants to Beat Your Ass. What I recall most vividly from that period is my loneliness, as well as all of the reckless decisions I made in my pursuit for a tough-girl shell capable of withstanding any attack. But when I battled my fear of going to school, I transformed into someone else entirely. In order to appear fierce and impenetrable to Jackie and the rest of the world, I hid every aptitude and interest I have.
As a student, a young woman, and a Latina, it was a battle to find my identity and inner power. I was fighting for my honor. Meg Medina grew up in Queens, New York, and now lives in Richmond, Virginia, as the daughter of Cuban immigrants.
