Tia Isa Wants a Car by Meg Medina

A little girl pitches in to help her t a save up for a big old car - and take the whole family to the beach - in a story told with warmth and sweetness.
(Ages 3-7)

T a Isa wants a car. A shiny green car the same color as the ocean, with wings like a swooping bird. A car to take the whole family to the beach. But saving is hard when everything goes into two piles - one for here and one for Helping Money, so that family members who live far away might join them someday. While T a Isa saves, her niece does odd jobs for neighbors so she can add her earnings to the stack. But even with her help, will they ever have enough? Meg Medina's simple, genuine story about keeping in mind those who are far away is written in lovely, lyrical prose and brought to life through Claudio Mu oz's charming characters.
Years ago, while I was in school, a girl in a rabbit-fur jacket surrounded me in the school yard and announced that one of our school bullies, a Latina girl named Jackie, was coming to beat me up, she says in Yaqui Delgado Wants to Beat Your Ass. What I recall most vividly from that period is my loneliness, as well as all of the reckless decisions I made in my pursuit for a tough-girl shell capable of withstanding any attack. But when I battled my fear of going to school, I transformed into someone else entirely. In order to appear fierce and impenetrable to Jackie and the rest of the world, I hid every aptitude and interest I have.

As a student, a young woman, and a Latina, it was a battle to find my identity and inner power. I was fighting for my honor. Meg Medina grew up in Queens, New York, and now lives in Richmond, Virginia, as the daughter of Cuban immigrants.
