The Tide by Clare Helen Welsh

Grandad doesn't remember things like he used to. But I love him as much as I always have. And I know that he loves me. A story about families, laughter, and how we can help a loved one with dementia live well.
"A beautifully illustrated story, helping to explain and give greater understanding of dementia to young people" -- Youth Engagement team, Alzheimer’s Society
"A carefully crafted tale about the relationship between grandparent & grandchild but #TheTide by @ClareHelenWelsh also touches upon memory loss using a gentle metaphor of the ebbing tide. An emotive story beautifully illustrated by @AshlingLindsay who never fails to deliver" -- Picture Books Blogger
"The Tide is up there as one of the most heartwarming books I’ve seen. If you’re looking for a book to explain families, growing older & living with dementia in the most child-friendly & resonating way, this is the book you need. Perfect for use throughout the primary school." -- Scott Evans
"The way Clare has handled her subject is perfect - the analogy of memory ebbing like the tide is so powerful and a brilliant way of broaching the subject with children... The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous too - Ashling is one of my favourites! -- Fiona Lumbers
"This story is all about family, with lyrical text and beautiful illustrations, it's a compassionate book. Perfect for children who have a loved one with dementia." -- Absolutely Mama Magazine
"A sensitive way to explain the difficult subject of dementia to young ones without upsetting them. An empathetic story full of sunny playful pictures that use the tide as an analogy to understanding memory loss... full of charm... ideal to share with the family or in the classroom." -- South Wales Evening Post
"An emotive book, this is a story about getting old, the love between a grandparent and a grandchild while quietly bringing to light the enormity of living with dementia. Gently thought-provoking." -- Angels and Urchins
"What I adore about The Tide most of all is that it celebrates Grandad – truly celebrates who he is... [It] conveys a wonderfully clear description of dementia – put into language that can be understood by all. It celebrates families, and their love and support for one another." -- My Book Corner
Clare does her best writing by the sea, which is lucky because she lives with her family in South West England, a stone’s throw away from crashing waves and salty sea air. When Clare isn’t writing stories for children, she is inspiring children to write their own. Ashling Lindsay is an illustrator and storyteller from Belfast, Northern Ireland. New to the picture book world, her debut work has already been nominated for the prestigious CILIP Kate Greenaway Illustration award, shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and long listed for the Klaus Flugge Prize.
