Edward Dmytryk (1908-1999) was an American filmmaker, educator, and writer who was nominated for an Academy Award. Dmytryk directed almost fifty award-winning films throughout his famous forty-year filmmaking career, including Crossfire (1947), The Caine Mutiny (1954), Raintree County (1957), and The Young Lions (1958). Dmytryk began lecturing on film and directing in the 1970s, first at the University of Texas at Austin and then at the University of Southern California. On Film Editing, On Screen Directing, On Screen Writing, On Screen Acting, and Cinema: Idea & Practice, all published by Focal Press/Routledge, are among his essential works on the craft of filmmaking. Joe McElhaney (contributor) is the author of Hitchcock, Lang, Minnelli (2006) and Albert Maysles (2009), as well as the editor of Vincente Minnelli: The Art of Entertainment (2009) and A Companion to Fritz Lang (2015).

Essays on the work of Howard Hawks, Preston Sturges, Roman Polanski, Chris Marker, and R.W. Tolkein have appeared in his numerous publications in major film journals and edited volumes. Fassbinder is a German film director. He is a film studies professor at the City University of New York's Hunter College.
