To Reach the Clouds by Philippe Petit
In 1974, a young Frenchman secretly - and illegally - rigged a tightrope between the Twin Towers. He made eight crossings in an hour, while 100,000 people watched in the streets of New York. Here, Petit recreates his six-and-a-half-year quest to realize his dream.
'One year after the nightmares of September 11, how good to remember that morning in 1974 when a young man gave New York a gift of astonishing, indelible beautyHow good that he has sat down now to give us this lively and often heart-stopping account of how he achieved his masterpiece'. Paul Auster
Philippe Petit Born into a middle class French family in 1949, Philippe Petit taught himself magic, juggling and hire-wire walking while still a child. At sixteen he began to travel the world, as a street juggler. He has performed illegal hire-wire walks between the towers of Notre Dame, the Twin Trade towers and the northern pylons of Sydney Harbour bridge.
