Torquay Revealed by Leslie Retallick
Where can you find a haunted car park? Or one of the most expensive private air-raid shelters in the country? Lost roads, long-forgotten quays, a drinking fountain with a dragon's head spout, reminders of two world wars and a suburban villa that was once a secluded farmhouse? Or how about a crumbling tower built for a lonely lady? Or a beer-brewing trough that was once a coffin? They can all be found in Torquay Revealed, a fascinating look at the largest and most popular holiday resort in the South West of England. Tracking down unusual stories about wellknown places, or discovering little-known corners of the resort, the author has unearthed a wealth of interesting information about Torquay. Whether you're a resident or a visitor, this fully illustrated guide will reveal a side of the Queen of the English Riviera that you probably never knew existed!
Leslie Retallick was born in Hornchurch, Essex but his family moved to Rugby in Warwickshire when he was six. While still at school he discovered a passion for history hen he took part in an archaeological excavation at the nearby Roman site of Tripontium. The family moved again, when he was in his late teens, to Torquay, where his parents ran a corner shop and where he still lives. Several years later, he took a summer seasonal job at Torre Abbey, an historic house and art gallery in Torquay, which led to a full-time senior post during a 36-year association with that building. There he expanded his interest in local history and has had a number of books and articles published on the subject. He is a keen photographer and video maker and is passionate about the conservation of what remains of Torquay's past.
