Toward Jerusalem by Amy Carmichael
Ninety-two inspiring poems from the pen of Amy Carmichael that will speak life and love into your heart.Alexander Carmichael (1832-1912) was born in Lismore, an island off the coast of Argyll, and received his education at Greenock Academy and the University of Edinburgh. His career as a Customs and Excise ministry civil officer carried him to Skye, Uist, and Oban, where Gaelic was still dominant in the mid-nineteenth century. From 1855 and 1899, in particular from 1865 to 1882, while the family lived in the Hebrides, he collaborated with folklorist John Francis Campbell (1822-1885) on his folklore collection and created his own significant collection. His collection primarily comprises of Gaelic prayers and invocations, hymns, blessings, charms, and a variety of tunes. The materials were gathered from both mainland and island locations and span several centuries.
Carmichael settled in Edinburgh in the end. Grazing and Aggressive Customs of the Outer Hebrides (1884), which was required for the Crofter Royal Commission report, and Carmina Gadelica (1900) are two of his most well-known works.
